As this is Thanksgiving week, I may not have much to say here. This blog is mainly concerned with politics, and at turkey-time our thoughts generally run elsewhere. It’s a time to remember all we’re thankful for. Politically-speaking, what might that be?
I do think there is cause for thanksgiving in our political life right now. God has given us the chance to get out of the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. “He” has given us many such opportunities over the years — because we’ve gotten ourselves into many messes — and we’ve taken advantage of them well enough to keep our country basically alive and healthy. We must always recall that we have been able to do this only because God has given us that chance.
America is nothing short of a miracle. It has been ever since its earliest days. Time and again, we’ve managed to move ahead — from our providential beginnings — to greater progress and prosperity. We have been a beacon of hope to the whole world. It is still to our shores that the oppressed of the world stream.
Thanks-giving, properly understood, is not a passive exercise but an active one. The Lord (as the saying goes) helps those who help themselves. Let us continue to keep that in mind as we forge ahead into a new century. Genuine gratitude never takes blessings for granted. God only continues to bestow them on those who are appreciative of them.
If we want God to go on blessing us, then, we must have the good sense to know what to do with them. Let us pledge that in the year ahead, we will thank God productively and constructively for all the bounties we receive.
