If the 2010 elections proved anything, it was that the American people are again the Boss in this country. We will fire elected officials who do not do our bidding. This is, of course, the way it is supposed to work. For the first time in many years, I have real hope for the USA.
Social conservatives have been deposed from their tyranny over the Republican Party. Libertarian conservatives have taken charge, which is as it should be. They are the true conservatives. Social conservatives are not real conservatives at all.
They depend on big, bullying, intrusive government to achieve their ends. Nobody was ever stopping them from living moral lives, or from telling other people they ought to live them. From the very start of their movement, they have been about big government coercion.
In that, they are no different from the progressive Leftists. “Conservatives,” indeed!
Candidates who let loose with stupid remarks about gays, for example, lost their elections. People are sick of this crap. And wolves in sheep’s clothing will end up extinct.
Any government big, powerful and intrusive enough to turn its guns against one group of Americans can — and someday will — do it to others. Hallelujah that we have finally learned that!
If people want to proclaim publicly that the earth is flat, or that people who don’t restrict themselves to the missionary position when having sex are going to Hell, I would defend to the death their right — under the First Amendment — to say that. But I will fight to the death their attempts to force their views on everybody else.
A brand new day is dawning. As Andrew Sullivan would say, “Know hope.”
